To preserve and protect the culture of the people of Lagos State, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Dr. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, has unveiled a book titled: “Customs and tradition of people of Lagos State.
Speaking at the unveiling of the book at the Airport Hotel, Lagos, the former deputy governor of the state commended the author, Dr Taye Oyefolu, a Principal Assistant Registrar at the Lagos State University of Education, for putting together the literary work, which documents the history of the people of Lagos State.
Represented at the event by Otunba ‘Ladi Oluwaloni, the Vice Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area (LCDA), the former Lagos deputy governor said that “the author and many others should be encouraged to document facts about the people of the state because if it is not done, it would be convenient for people to begin to turn facts upside down.
She also said that it is time for true Africans to begin to write the history of their race and to correct some erroneous impressions created about them, as well as the distortion of historical facts by foreign writers.
According to her, the step has also become necessary to end the activities of persons deliberately turning the facts upside down regarding the history of their people.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Cornelius Ojelabi, also commended Oyefolu’s effort to document some of the facts in the book concerning the history of the Lagos people.
Ojelabi encouraged Lagos people to embrace and support the literary work of Dr. Oyefolu, saying that it is the only way to guarantee the continuous existence of their culture and by extension, the culture of the Yoruba people.
Other dignitaries present at the book launch were the former Deputy Governor of the state, Princess Sarah Sosan; leader of the Lagos-West Senatorial District, Chief Rabiu Oluwa.
Others included the Commissioner for Basic and Tertiary Education; Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun and Tolani Sule, Special Adviser, Works, Dr. Adekunle Olayinka, the Deputy Chief Whip of the state House of Assembly, Setonji David, and traditional rulers from Iba, Akesan, Badagry, and Ojo.
